5. Program of discipline

Description of academic discipline, its goals, subject of study and learning outcomes

“Economic theory” is concerned with the evolution and main principles, concepts, problems and notions of economics. The modern types of economic systems and the production basics are explained as well during the course. The further study is related to microeconomic focus. The concepts of demand, supply and elasticity are used to explain the workings of simple, competitive markets. The theory of perfect competition is reviewed to expand your understanding of competitive markets, followed by theories regarding monopoly and imperfect competition. The essence of entrepreneurial activities, costs, revenue, profit are given to you be oriented in a modern business. Fundamentals of macroeconomics are also covered, where basic models of unemployment, inflation and labour market are developed. Attention is also given to the role of money in the economy and the role of government in the management of the economy through the use of fiscal, monetary and other policies. The basic notions of international relations and global problems of mankind are also introduced.
The aim of the discipline is to provide students with a thorough understanding of core concepts and methods of economics. The study of “Economic theory” will help students to learn the economist’s way of thinking and to be able to use economic concepts and methods to analyse and interpret real-world economic phenomena, and to assess issues of economic policy.
Objectives of the course “Economic theory” are to familiarize students with the: fundamental economic categories, economic laws and the principles of the economic systems functioning; economic relations, economic mechanisms and actions of people, concerning the effective management in the conditions of the limited economic and natural resources; latest processes of globalization of the economic life of humanity.
A student has to demonstrate such learning outcomes on the discipline:
– to know basic economic laws, notions and principles, major forces under market economy;
– to know different types of market structures and their influence on the enterprise activity;
– to understand business strategy of enterprise;
– to analyze how supply and demand affect prices;
– to know the types of ownership;
– to asses value of enterprise assets;
– to determine costs in production process of the enterprise;
– to analyze the results of financial and economic activity of the enterprise;
– to analyze key trends in international trade, currency relationships and globalization.
The teaching of this discipline aims at formation and development of the following students’ competences:
general:
– understand and apply advanced knowledge in the field of economics;
– demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding within the discussed topics;
– ability of logical thinking and ability to analyze economic phenomena at macro- and microeconomic levels;
– ability and knowledge of appropriate tools for analyzing enterprise performance;
– demonstrate the ability to independently identify and formulate questions within the economic field;
– demonstrate the ability to independently identify, evaluate, and integrate information to analyze and provide solutions to problems and situations related to the economic field;
– independently search for and critically evaluate information in order to discuss and analyze economic issues and situations;
– propose solutions to economic problems and situations and perform tasks within specified time frames, work independently as well as collaborate with others in problem solving situations;
professional:
– gain knowledge in the area of efficient economy and business performance;
– ability to analyze the government’s economic policy;
– ability to define different market structures and choose the best possible way of enterprise performance with respect to demand and supply at the market;
– gain knowledge and familiarities on production, costs and enterprise decision making in different market structures and time periods;
– ability to identify key issues in international trade, currency relationships and global problems of mankind.
